"The Lovers" Pearl Pendant
Inspired by Virginia Oldoini, Countess of Castiglione Virginia Oldoini, better known as La Castiglione, was an Italian aristocrat during the Italian Risorgimento. She was sent to France by her cousin Cavour with the intent of using her graces to seduce and convince Emperor Napoleon III to side his troops with those of the Savoy house for the cause of Italian independence. The attempt succeeded and the two became lovers. Napoleon III showered her with jewelry, including a necklace of 5 rows of pearls which she often wore. This pendant represents two lovers: he embraces her and between the two bodies a silver shape recalls that of a unified Italy, the reason for which the two met. The man and the woman are also joined by a thread of pearls which reminds us of one of the most famous gifts the Emperor gave to the Countess.
